Self Assessments and Rating Scales

From PA to Psychiatry: How Self-Assessments Transformed My Practice Hey there! I’m excited to share a little about my journey transitioning into psychiatry and how self-assessment tools have become game-changers in my practice. As a Physician Assistant (PA) who moved into the world of mental health, I quickly learned the value of self-assessment questionnaires. These […]

Limiting Beliefs

Alchemy might sound like something straight out of a Harry Potter book, but it’s actually an ancient practice that aimed to transform base metals into precious ones, like turning lead into gold. Alchemists weren’t just after shiny treasures, though. They were on a quest for knowledge, self-improvement, and the ultimate secret: the Philosopher’s Stone, which supposedly granted eternal life and infinite wisdom.
Now, let’s talk about a modern kind of alchemy—one that involves transforming your own life. Imagine a middle-aged woman named Lucinda. She’s spent years working in a job that pays the bills but doesn’t light up her soul. One day, she decides it’s time for a change.
Lucinda is about to embark on her own alchemical journey.
The Spark of Transformation and the Quest for Knowledge
In alchemy, transformation starts with growing dis-ease and tension. Then a spark—a moment of realization. Maybe this comes from a deep desire to do something more meaningful or a simple moment of inspiration. This spark ignites us and sets us on a new path.
Just like the alchemists sought knowledge, Lucinda dives into learning. She’s not just gaining new skills; she’s rediscovering herself and what truly makes her happy. Every piece of knowledge she gains is like an ingredient in her own personal elixir, bringing her closer to her dream.
Facing Challenges and Trials
Alchemy wasn’t easy, and neither is changing careers. We all have doubts, fears, and the occasional setback. But each trial is a transformation and a step forward.
The Philosopher’s Stone isn’t a magical object but a metaphor for achieving. It represents the moment when hard work and learning pays off. Alchemy teaches us that the journey is just as important as the destination. Journeys of transformation are filled with discovery, growth, and self-improvement. But also, set back and doubt.
Identifying Self-Limiting Beliefs: Self-limiting beliefs are those negative thoughts and assumptions that hold us back. Like, “I’m too old to start over,” “I’m not smart enough,” or “What if I fail?” Once I identified my self-limiting beliefs, I learned to challenge them by questioning their validity. I asked myself, “Is it really true that I’m too old to start over?” and “What evidence do I have that I’m not good enough?” By examining the evidence for and against these beliefs, I started to see them for what they were: baseless fears. This process helped me reframe my thinking into more positive and constructive thoughts.
It’s not always that easy and we take it day by day…

Pharmacology Receptor Binding

Agonist, Antagonist, Reuptake Inhibition Here’s the scoop on how medications affect change: They latch onto receptors on neurons and can either mimic the brain’s own chemicals (these are called agonists) or block them (known as antagonists). This is how meds can either ramp up brain activity or dial it down, depending on what’s needed. Then […]

Receptor Basics

We talked about neurotransmitters, let’s talk receptors. In the complex world of neurobiology, understanding how our brains process signals is like solving a dynamic puzzle. Neurotransmitters and pharmacological agents act as pieces that fit into specific receptors, altering their structure or function and profoundly influencing cellular behaviors. Let’s explore the mechanisms of two major receptor […]

Neurotransmitters – the building blocks of neuronal transmission

Hi there! Today, I thought we should start with some fundamental principles of Psych. Let’s dive into neurotransmitters. Think of neurotransmitters as the brain’s way of sending text messages between nerve cells. These chemical messengers zip from one neuron to another across the synaptic clefts. Depending on the message, they can either amp up or […]
